Potatoes have once again found themselves at the center of a media whirlwind, as recent reports reveal an overwhelmingly positive sentiment towards the humble tuber in both traditional and social media.
Potatoes USA, the national marketing organization, announced that potatoes saw high volumes of coverage from July 2023 to June 2024, with sentiments largely favorable, driven by health-focused narratives and unexpected endorsements from high-profile athletes.
Traditional Media Coverage
In traditional media, potatoes were featured or mentioned in 1,126 articles over the past year. Of these, 70% were positive, while 20% remained neutral, and only 10% had a negative tone. This led to a favorable positive-to-negative ratio of 7.45:1, with more than seven positive articles for every negative one.
The surge in coverage was especially notable around the holiday season, as media outlets highlighted potato recipes and cooking tips. Moreover, a growing emphasis on health benefits associated with potatoes contributed to the year-long increase in positive media mentions.
Social Media Sentiment
The positivity wasn’t confined to traditional media; social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube, echoed similar sentiments. Potatoes were mentioned in 1,787 social media posts, of which 80% were positive, 15% neutral, and a mere 5% negative.
This resulted in an astounding positive-to-negative ratio of 17.4:1, underscoring the strong positive sentiment in online discussions. Notably, social media conversations about potatoes saw a significant uptick in health-related topics, indicating that positive nutrition messaging is resonating with online audiences.
Celebrity Endorsements
Adding to the positive buzz, two prominent U.S. athletes recently made headlines by publicly declaring their love for potatoes, further boosting the tuber’s image. Simone Biles, the American gymnastics superstar, captured the hearts of millions when she revealed on the Today Show that fries are her “all-time favorite meal.”
In a playful moment, host Hoda Kotb surprised Biles with a bouquet of fries on-air, celebrating her recent gold-medal wins.

These endorsements from elite athletes have undoubtedly contributed to the positive media coverage and social media sentiment surrounding potatoes, reaffirming their versatility and health benefits. As potatoes continue to fuel champion performances and gain favor across media platforms, their image as a nutritious and beloved staple in the American diet only grows stronger.
